Lena Jaynes, 100, passed away peacefully at Alexian Brothers Hospice Residence on June 18, 2018. She was the beloved wife of the late Clifford W. Jaynes, the cherished mother of the late Lawrence (Hedy), David (Joanne) and Dennis (Patricia). Lean was the proud grandmother of Jennifer Piechowiak, Michael Jaynes, Julie Ann Mulligan, Jeff Jaynes, Kelly Hopkins, Jenna Jaynes and March Jaynes. She was also the kind, sweet great grandmother of Lucas and Lia Piechowiak, Ashley and Juliana Jaynes, Keegan, Finley and Everett Mulligan and Emma Jaynes.
Lena was born in West Virginia, the youngest of five children. The family relocated to Chicago, where she as educated and met the love of life, Clifford. They married in 1942. Soon after Cliff’s return from World War II, three amazing sons were born. Lena dedicated herself to ensuring her boys were raised with Catholic values, were “spic n span”, were well fed and did their homework. They exceeded her expectations, growing into fine, successful men. The family escaped to a second home in Lakeside, Michigan on weekends, immersing themselves in the countryside beauty within walking distance of Lake Michigan. Lean was employed by Oak Park Hospital as a nutritionist, during this.
When Cliff retired, they relocated to Roselle. They so enjoyed this time closer to their boys and grandchildren. Lena’s passion was sewing! She made over 100 Christmas stockings, wall hangings, tree shirts and door hangars, for all the family-beloved dogs included! She continued to spoil the family with excellent meals and cream pies. They enjoyed road trips to Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, as well as sleepovers and scrabble games with the grandkids. And she never missed a BULLS game!
Following Cliff’s passing in 1995, Lena’s strength and perseverance were envied. Her dear friends and PACE bus surrounded her with assistance, driving her weekly Mass, shopping excursions and the beauty salon to set her gorgeous curly updo. Her long walks, excellent diet, crossword puzzles and powerful faith all contributed to her long, happy life. Her smile and warm presence will be deeply missed, but always remembered and honored.
A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at St. Walters Catholic Church in Roselle on June 21, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside. In lieu of flowers, her family would appreciate prayers and act of kindness in her honor.
Visitation Thursday from 9:30 to 12:00 noon at Salerno’s Rosedale Chapels, 450 W. Lake St, Roselle, 60172 (3/4 mile west of Bloomingdale/Roselle Rd).
