John A. Santoro, Age 79. Beloved husband of Elisa (nee Mondia) Santoro. Loving father of Krista (Michael) Augusta. Devoted son of the late Jerome and the late Angela (nee Natale) Santoro. Cherished Papa of John and Drake Augusta. Dear brother of Nick (Linda) Santoro and Geraldine Gall. Fond uncle of Jerry (Angela) Santoro & Lisa (Derek) Gordon; great uncle of Blake, Gianna, Nicholas, Jerome and great great uncle of Theo. John grew up in Chicago; he attended St. Thomas Aquinas School and was very active at same church as an altar boy. He also attended Fenwick High School where, along with a strong hold on academics he was part of The Fenwick Friar championship football team. From there he moved on to Lewis College, again carrying his high academic requirements, he was also an outstanding baseball pitcher for the Lewis Flyers under the coaching of Gordie Gillespie. As sports go, John had a very competitive nature and loved a challenge. He played hockey until he was 50 years old and his golf game was very precise, he achieved low scores with each game, even now. Through his career, he was a science teacher at St. Pius X in Lombard. Then his ambitions moved on to Texaco and the transportation and printing industries where he held high level positions in management and created professional quality training materials John was very active in many other organizations. Most importantly, John loved his family. The best husband any woman could ask for. Being a brother, uncle, cousin, father and grandfather was always top priority with him. John was extremely kind, intelligent and very well spoken. He kept friends throughout his whole lifetime and made new ones every day. His warmth, understanding, elegance, and sense of humor made him a magnet to all. There is a very big hole in the world today with the passing of John. He will be sorely missed by all. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Mercy Home for Poor Boys and Girls or The Alzheimer’s Foundation.

I know John as a classmate at Fenwick High School where he was also my team mate on the baseball team. John was a great guy--full of life and laughter, and one of the fastest players on the baseball team as well as the football team which won the Prep Bowl and was a champion in the Chicago Catholic League. Please accept my condolences on John's passing. May His Soul Rest In Peace.

I met John when we were in grammar school and he was running away from me with a football in his hands. At Fenwick I continued to chase John across the football field, but could never catch him. All these years later I was still chasing John, but across the golf course not the football field. He always had a magnetic personality, a sense of humor , and a warm , open heart. I know our Fenwick golf group will think of John every time we get together. He made us more than we ever were without him.

John and I met when we were 12 years old. We played little league, pony league and colt league baseball at Lexon AC, in Chicago, near Cicero and Harrison next to the Wonder Bread factory. As kid, he was a great athlete and a fun-loving guy. Growing up together, we knew each other’s families and ate spaghetti or Carm’s beef sandwiches together. We became even better friends while attending Fenwick HS and playing on the 1962 championship football team and the not-quite-so-good 1963 team. We hung together in school, on the football field, and out of school. Funny, charming, and smart, John was loved by all who knew him. We drifted apart after college but enjoyed meeting up at reunions of the 1962 football team. After the 2022 reunion, we went out together, laughed a lot and revived our close friendship. With sadness, my wife Maureen and I send our heartfelt condolences to Elisa and the entire family.

John was the beloved husband of my dear Aunt, Elisa. He treated her like a queen and was a wonderful addition to our family. The love between them was obvious and they were beautiful together. We always loved talking football with John, as he shared a kinship with my husband and sons having all played the game over multiple decades. We will remember his kind heart, generous spirit and the way he fit right into our family.

It is such a pleasure having John and Elissa as neighbors in Wood Dale. I served on BOTG Boards with John and his experienced and wise input will be greatly missed. I will also miss seeing his smiling face in the community. Although I will not be able to attend, I am praying for Elissa and the family.
